Twas The Nightshift Before Christmas

Twas The Nightshift Before Christmas by Adam Kay (2022 Picador paperback 147pp)

Not too much to say about this one – if you were fan of  “This Is Going To Hurt” (the book or television series) or “Undoctored” you know what you’re going to get in this book.

Originally published several years ago as a slim hardback stocking stuffer, this recent paperback edition collects Kay’s Christmas/New year period diary entries during the six years he spent as a doctor in the UK NHS.

Everything you expect is here – gory medical details, dark humour, some serious thoughts and his sheer exhaustion. It’s the same mix that made his first book a best-seller but if you haven’t read his other works, it might be a good first taster.

I read this book in around 2 hours so don’t expect to be immersed in Kay’s world for long with this volume. You will get a chuckle or two and a few new worries for your trouble.
